On Saturday, the Auburn Tigers pulled off one of more improbable victories in recent memory when they returned an errant field goal, with no time left on the clock in a tie game, 100 yards for the touchdown.
What made the moment that much more classic was the fact that they did it against the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in the Iron Bowl.
No Auburn team has won the Iron Bowl since–well, since they were led by a certain Heisman Trophy winner named Cam Newton.
Yes, Auburn’s last win over the Tide was in 2010, when Newton led a monumental comeback in the second half after he and the Tigers fell behind 24-0.
So of course, after the Carolina Panthers game today, Newton was absolutely asked about Saturday’s game in his post-game press conference, and he couldn’t have been happier about the outcome:
It has to mean that much more to Newton that Gus Malzahn is the one leading the charge of this 2013 version of the Tigers. Malzahn was the offensive coordinator at Auburn in 2010, and he and Newton had a rather close relationship.
