Rory McIlory captured his first win of 2013 on Sunday, shooting a seven-under 66 in his final round to edge out Adam Scott by a single stroke.
Scott, who won the Australian Masters and Australian PGA Championship earlier this year, built a huge lead on the first day of the Open thanks to shooting a course record, but he struggled on Sunday. He bogeyed the final hole, handing McIlroy the victory.
A relieved McIlroy told reporters that he’s learned a lot from his difficult season:
I think I’m more experienced, more patient.
Not getting as down on myself or not being as hard on myself because golf is a long career and you can’t have too many highs and lows in terms of emotions.
You’ve just got to try and keep it on an even keel and I feel like I’ve done a better job of that this year as the months have gone past (Reuters).
John Senden finished the tournament in third, and Bryden Macpherson tied with Rhein Gibson for fourth.
