The Los Angeles Kings are no strangers to having celebrities attend their games. Being in L.A. and all, it makes sense to see faces like Tom Hanks out in the crowd. That was the case yesterday when the Kings were taking on the Calgary Flames at the Staples Center.
Los Angeles entered the third period trailing, but appeared to get the equalizer from Justin Williams with less than five minutes to play. His rocket of a wrist shot hit the back post and popped right back out. The Kings celebrated as the referees waved it off and the goal judge took about seven seconds to hit the red light.
This prompted a rather hilarious response from Hanks, who was imploring the referees to call the War Room in Toronto from his rink-side seat.
The video review clearly showed the puck entering the net, but it’s easy to see why both refs waived off the goal initially.
While the tally would knot the game for a few moments, the Flames stormed back and scored at the 19:37 mark of the third period to reclaim the lead and to secure the victory. To call this one unlikely would be an understatement, and Hanks and the rest of the Kings faithful went home shocked after seeing L.A. lose with only seconds remaining.
