Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2012-13 season of Spain’s top division, La Liga. Believe it or not, that is not the highest individual honor for a player in La Liga. In the United States we’re used to the MVP award being the highest honor but that isn’t the case here. Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the more prestigious “Player of the Season” award.
Ronaldo suggested he would have preferred the other award but happily accepted the MVP award.
“It is an honor and privilege to receive this great award for the Most Valuable Player — it motivates me to keep working harder,” Ronaldo said in his speech while accepting the MVP prize. “I am proud to be in the Liga BBVA. For me, this is the best league in the world and I am at the best club in the world. How could I not be happy? Hopefully next year I can win the award for the best player. I will be working towards it.”
With voting extended for the even more prestigious Ballon d’Or award at the beginning of the next year. Messi also won the prize for Best Liga BBVA Forward.
“I would like to thank the LFP and the Liga BBVA for this prize,” Messi said. “It is a recognition of the [Barca players’] work all year and without them I would not have scored these goals.”
