Former Knicks player Anthony Mason worked 'security' for LL Cool J

Any fan of 90′s basketball remembers the gritty Anthony Mason – the former New York Knicks power forward, who alongside Charles Oakley helped do the dirty work for Patrick Ewing.

That wasn’t the only job Mason had though, at least not according to rapper and now converted actor LL Cool J, who told SLAM Magazine Mason used to moonlight as security for him. Well, kind of.

I’ll let ‘Ladies Love Cool James’ explain:

I grew up a Knicks fan, but you know what? I was always conflicted because Mike was so inspiring during the time when I was coming up in New York. But Pat Ewing was always a good friend of mine. Oakley [was a good friend], after he came to New York. I knew all the players. Anthony Mason was my man—he used to be in Queens all the time in my neighborhood. He used to throw guys out of barbecues for me. They were talking trash to me and Anthony Mason used to come in and grab them and be like, “Y’all gotta go! Y’all gotta go!” He was my man.

So technically, Mason wasn’t employed by the rapper, rather just doing his friendly duties. But still, it’s a pretty awesome story.

Also, I’m going to imagine that all of LL’s ‘barbecues’ back in the day were similar to that of MC Hammer’s ‘Pumps And A Bump’ music video, because, well, that just makes it that much more hilarious. And no, I’m not paying your optometry bill after you went and to Google that.
