On Monday evening, the Baltimore Orioles traded closer Jim Johnson to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for infielder Jemile Weeks.

Johnson was not all that long ago viewed as one of the better closers in the league as he’s posted three straight seasons of a sub 3.00 ERA, but struggles this past year lead to the O’s making a move. Now they’re in the market to replace Johnson and will look to acquire such an arm, either via trade or free agency and have interest in both Edward Mujica and John Axford:

Sources: #Orioles plan to add a closer to replace Johnson. Numerous FA candidates. Trade possible, but less likely. Team also seeking bat.

Top free agent closer Joe Nathan is likely headed to Detroit, so that’s another option off the table for Baltimore though they still have plenty of solid candidates to pick from as they attempt to replace Johnson.

Both Axford and Mujica come with pretty big question marks, health in regards to Mujica who has dealt with recent arm issues while Axford was awful in a closing role last season, though, seemingly turned things around at season end.
