While the Detroit Tigers are coming off three straight trips to the American League Championship, they’ve done it without a big name closer.
As they look to make their fourth straight appearance this coming season, they’ll likely have an All-Star fireman in the mix as it’s being reported the Tigers are close to a deal with closer Joe Nathan.
Nathan, who was with the Texas Rangers this past season was not retained in free agency due to his age (39) and contractual demands. Despite those warts, Nathan was still extremely effective in the offensively charged American League West, posting a 2.09 ERA over the previous two seasons while converting 80 of 86 save chances.
Terms of the potenital deal haven’t been released.
The Tigers were rumored to be long interested in Nathan, along with other closers like Grant Balfour and Brian Wilson though Nathan likely was likely to take the fewest commitment in terms of years which the Tigers were looking for.
