The 15th-ranked Florida Gators will again be without guard Scottie Wilbekin fo an extended period of time.
Wilbekin suffered a high ankle sprain in the Gators’ 65-64 loss to the 12th-ranked Connecticut Huskies Monday night. Wilbekin fell to the ground with about three minutes to go in the game, was helped off of the court and never returned. The school took x-rays on Wilbekin’s ankle Tuesday and the results came back negative.
They would not, however, give any timetable for Wilbekin’s return.
The Gators are used to playing without Wilbekin. He was suspended for the first five games of the season. He made his season debut last Monday, scoring 12 points, dishing out seven assists, recording five rebounds and recording three steals in an 86-60 victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins. On Friday, he struggled, scoring just seven points on two-of-12 shooting in a 67-66 victory over the rival Florida State Seminoles.
Although the Gators were 4-1 without Wilbekin, this is poor timing. Highly-touted freshman guard Kasey Hill is already out with a similar injury and big man Damontre Harris remains out indefinitely.
The Gators will be back in action Tuesday when they host the sixth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
