Before the 2013 season began, there was a quarterback battle in Happy Valley for the Penn State Nittany Lions starting job between JUCO transfer Tyler Ferguson and true freshman Christian Hackenberg.
Ultimately, days before the opening game against the Syracuse Orange, head coach Bill O’Brien decided to go with Hackenberg, which proved to be the right decision as Hackenberg on Tuesday took home the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award following the great, introductory year that he had.
Because of his class and the tremendous season that he did have, Hackenberg left his backup with a dilemma.
Wednesday, Ferguson chose to handle it the easy way by asking for his release from his Penn State scholarship, which was granted to him immediately, according to Penn State’s 247 Sports page, Lions247.
Because Ferguson has not used a redshirt, he has three seasons at whichever school he chooses to play two.
Ferguson should have no problem competing for, and winning, a starting job elsewhere as he did take the Happy Valley QB battle right to the very end.
