On an interview on the Dan Patrick Show, a well listened to radio program, USC Athletic Director Pat Haden was asked if he had contacted former NFL head coach and current ESPN Monday Night Football Color Commentator Jon Gruden.

Haden acknowledged he had, saying the following: “I talked with Jon a while back,” Haden said. “He wants to coach in the pros. If he’s a head coach, he wants to coach in the pros.”

Haden discussed the process of searching for a coach after firing Lane Kiffin so early in the process.

“In some ways, doing it in a week or two is easier. You fire a coach at the end of the season and boom, you get somebody hired right away. We had a couple of months where we could do a lot of due-diligence and dream about anybody. Sometimes, you can overthink it.”

That might be a way to sort of cover his tracks a little bit in light of the fact that USC has hired Steve Sarkisian for the job this week.  There had been quite a few people including Dan Patrick that were connecting Gruden to USC early in the process.
