Evgeni Malkin was injured during practice this morning and won’t play this evening when the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the San Jose Sharks according to Josh Yohe of The Pittsburgh Tribune Review. It’s unclear at this juncture how long “Geno” could be on the shelf, but head coach Dan Bylsma called the injury a day-to-day issue.
Evgeni Malkin is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. #Pens

That’s a big loss for the Penguins as they gear up for what could very well be a Stanley Cup preview against the Sharks. Pittsburgh is already battling injuries on the blue line, but Malkin’s hot play has been keeping the team motoring along lately. He has 15 points in his last 16 games and has been one of the hottest players in the NHL since the end of October.
Malkin has pushed all the way to second in league scoring, and trails only Sidney Crosby in that regard. A lot of the heavy offensive lifting will fall to No. 87 with “Geno” on the sidelines and players like Pascal Dupuis will be forced to elevate their games a bit to pick up the slack while the All-World center is out.
The Penguins are on a four-game winning streak and would obviously like to keep that going against the equally hot Sharks.
