Report: Mariners offering $230-240MM for Cano
The Seattle Mariners might be more of a contender for Robinson Cano than initially thought. According to a report (Spanish link) from Enrique Rojas at ESPN Deportes, Seattle is said to be willing to offer in the neighborhood of $230-240 million for the All Star second baseman’s services.
The New York Yankees are said to have offered around $165-170 million over 7 seasons for Cano, while he is searching for a deal worth $260 million over 9 seasons, according to Anthony McCarron at the New York Daily News.
Seattle’s deal is certainly closer to what Cano is seeking, but is the allure of playing on the biggest stage — and the endorsements that come with it — in New York too much to overcome for the Mariners?
New York recently signed coveted free agent outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury to a 7-year, $153 million deal on Wednesday. Pairing him with Cano might be the coup the Yankees need to get back over the hump in the AL East.
Cano, 31, is a five-time All Star and has finished in the top-10 in MVP voting 4 times in his career. He won a Gold Glove in 2010 and 2012 and has been the recipient of five Silver Slugger awards.
Cano has hit .309 in 9 seasons in Major League Baseball, with 204 homeruns and 822 RBI.
