The UConn Huskies defeated the Maine Black Bears 95-68 at the XL Center in Hartford, CT. Connecticut improved to 9-0, and Maine fell to 1-7.
The UConn backcourt was too much for the Black Bears to handle. Ryan Boatright finished with 17 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Omar Calhoun scored 16 points along with 4 rebounds. Player of the Year candidate Shabazz Napier finished with seven points, eight assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Forward DeAndre Daniels had a perfect night from the field (6-6 FG) to score 16 points along with 5 rebounds. Niels Giffey missed one shot from the field (4-5 FG), and finished with 12 points and 6 boards. Many of the reserves saw substantial playing time as well, including freshman Kentan Facey whose 9 rebounds are promising for a team lacking good rebounders.
UConn’s high shooting percentage continues to carry them (shot 53.3% from the field against Maine). However, it should be alarming that they rank 201st in the country with 35.3 rebounds per game. If they fail to incorporate their big men as rebounding threats, then the close games will begin going the other way. Please let me know what you think in the comments section below.
The Black Bears were led by junior guard Xavier Pollard who scored 20 points along with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Junior forward Zarko Valjarevic scored 13 points, and sophomore guard Dimitry Akanda-Coronel netted 9 points with 4 turnovers. Sophomore guard Shaun Lawton also scored nine points with four turnovers. Maine had 14 turnovers and were outrebounded 38-24. Those totals will need to be improved, especially against opponents with superior offensive capabilities.
Next game: UConn will play Stanford (6-2) on December 18th at 9 pm ET on ESPN 2. Maine will play Army (1-6) on December 13th at 6 pm ET.
