Every time the World Cup draw is announced, the most talented overall group is deemed the Group of Death.  Getting to the knockout round is extremely difficult and teams initially projected to go are vulnerable to be knocked out in the group phase of the tournament.  The United States has drawn the honor and punishment of being in the 2014 World Cup.

The United States was put in Group G with Germany, Portugal and Ghana.  The good news, if there is any, is that the United States will play Ghana first before getting the Germans or Portuguese, but Ghana has been a thorn in the sides of the U.S. in the past as well.

The American team would like to believe this is a talented group that could do damage if it can get to the knockout round, but with this draw, they have become an underdog to get out of that group.  The World Cup happens this coming Summer started in June, so the team has time to prepare, but it will be a difficult road to navigate if the Americans are going to make an argument that soccer is getting better in the United States.
