As we mentioned early in November, Twentieth Century Fox is in negotiations with director James Mangold to develop a new Wolverine movie for the studio. However, there may be a large, mutant-sized hole in that plan. Hugh Jackman is unsure if he will be returning to the franchise as Wolverine.
Wait…what? Is there even a Wolverine on the big screen without Hugh Jackman?
Jackman told Vanity Fair that while he is excited to be able to develop something with Mangold from the beginning, he is unsure of his mutant future.
I don’t know whether or not I will do this next movie.” Jackman says. “I am really proud of this movie and I am excited to develop something with Jim Mangold from the beginning because that is a great ride. That’s exciting, to see what we come up with but I have a very high expectation of what it would need to be [for me to star in it] and if it doesn’t reach those, I won’t be doing it.”
On one hand I am incredibly happy that he has artistic integrity and doesn’t want to be attached to something if it doesn’t feel right; however, on the other hand, the comic book nerd inside of me is crying a river just thinking of the possibility of the franchise moving on without Jackman.
Jackman also told Vanity Fair that there is currently no script for the potential film at this time.
“No there is not but Jim Mangold and I were literally on the phone last night talking about ideas but there is no script and no writer yet so it’s a way off.”
Jackman did say earlier this year that he did not have any future commitments to the X-Men franchise following the upcoming release of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
As of right now, there is no definitive answer on either side. All we can do now is sit here and wait. In the meantime, the rest of us are left to ponder the future of one of the most successful franchises of all time.
How would you feel if the studio were to continue the franchise should Jackman choose not to continue? Could you even picture anyone else as the hot-tempered, claw-wielding mutant? Let us know what you think.
