The Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins got their Saturday night game off to a punishing pace, with the Penguins setting the pace. Unfortunately, things turned ugly quickly when Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik was taken off the ice on a stretcher after being pummeled by Bruins forward Shawn Thornton.

Orpik had landed a huge hit on Bruins forward Loui Eriksson, which was followed by some cheap shots on Bruins winger Brad Marchand and mayhem ensued.

Thorton grabbed Orpik from behind well after the whistle and shoved him to the ground. As Orpik was laying on the ice, Thorton went on to land consecutive punches on the defenseman’s head that left him unconscious on the ice.

Orpik remained on the ice for several minutes, before the stretcher was called out and taken off of the ice. Orpik was conscious as he was being wheeled off.

It was an ugly scene and completely uncalled for, so we wouldn’t expect to see Thornton out on the ice any time soon. A lengthy suspension would be very deserved.

If you missed the blows from Thornton, you can catch the video below:
