AutoZone Liberty Bowl 2013: Rice vs. Mississippi State

In the 2013 Liberty Bowl, the Mississippi State Bulldogs of the SEC will take on the Rice Owls, who defeated the Marshal Thundering Herd 41-24 to win the Conference USA championship Saturday.

The Bulldogs earned a berth in the bowl after they came from behind to defeat their arch rivals, the Ole Miss Rebel 17-10 on Thanksgiving night.  The Bulldogs entered the game with a 5-6 record and as an underdog so it appeared that Dan Mullen’s crew was going to miss a bowl this season. The Bulldogs were fairly competitive in losses to the Auburn Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies and Alabama Crimson Tide, but playing in the SEC West and scheduling an out of conference game with the Oklahoma State Cowboys took it’s toll.

The Owls finished with a 10-3 record, losing to the Aggies, Houston Cougars and North Texas Mean Green.
