At one point and time, John Axford was a top closer. But struggles during the 2012 campaign which was followed by more issues in 2013 eventually lead to the Milwaukee Brewers removing Axford from the role.
That said, the 30-year-old reliever ended the season with the St. Louis Cardinals where he pitched relatively well, all be it in just 10.1 innings.
Was it a return to form? Or was it a streak of good luck? That’s something the Chicago Cubs, Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners are all wondering as well as it’s being reported the three teams are showing interest in the former Brewers fireman:
Of course, the Cubs, Orioles and Mariners all had terrible situations at closer last season so they’re hoping Axford, who likely can be had on the cheap can return to the form he saw in 2011 where he posted a 1.95 ERA in 73.2 innings.
