Brendan Shanahan is going to have his hands full with various hearings concerning several events that transpired over the weekend. Among the players that are facing possible suspension is Dion Phaneuf of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who hit Boston Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller from behind last night.
A look at the hit in question.
There’s no question about whether or not Phaneuf hit Miller in the back. The Boston defenseman had his back turned and that’s just not a play that Toronto’s captain can make. Tack on the fact that the Leafs were trailing 4-2 with less than three minutes to play in the third period, and the optics get even worse.
According to Amalie Benjamin of The Boston Globe, Phaneuf’s hearing will occur on Tuesday on the telephone. The lack of an in-person hearing indicates that the NHL won’t seek a suspension greater than five games.
The Bruins could ill afford to lose yet another player from their blue line. Miller was filling in on a banged up back end and managed to score his first NHL goal earlier in the contest before getting a face full of glass courtesy of Phaneuf. The 26-year-old defender was shaken up on the play, but was able to finish the game.
