No. 20 Gonzaga beats West Virginia with late surge

The Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 80-76 at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, WV.  The Bulldogs improved to 8-1, and the Mountaineers fell to 6-3.

West Virginia led for most of the second half until Bulldogs guard Kevin Pangos got hot from downtown.  Pangos hit three 3-pointers in less than two minutes to punctuate a 13-0 run, putting the Zags ahead 74-66 with 2:26 left. WVU would not go away, and after a Juwan Staten jumper, the Mountaineers were down 76-74 with 54 seconds on the clock.  On the Bulldogs’ next possession, center Sam Dower flushed a tip slam, giving Gonzaga a four point lead.  West Virginia failed to force a turnover in the final seconds, and after some free throws, the Bulldogs won 80-76.

Gonzaga top performers: Center Przemek Karnowski scored 19 points with 13 rebounds and two blocks.  Kevin Pangos finished with 18 points, three rebounds, and four assists.  Guard Gary Bell Jr. netted 15 points, nine rebounds, and two steals.  Sam Dower scored 11 points, and grabbed five boards.

WVU top performers: Guard Eron Harris scored 23 points with four rebounds and three assists.  Guard Juwan Staten scored 17 points, collected nine rebounds, and dropped three dimes.  Forward Devin Williams grabbed nine boards and scored seven points.

Next game: Gonzaga travels to South Alabama (5-4) at 10 pm ET on Saturday.  WVU heads to Marshall (4-5) at 7:30 pm ET on Saturday.
