Kari Lehtonen has been mostly outstanding for the Dallas Stars so far this season. He’s made numerous highlight reel saves and has been doing his darnedest to keep the Stars in each and every game he starts. That wasn’t nearly enough against the Chicago Blackhawks last night, as Dallas was whitewashed by a 6-2 final.
The game wasn’t out of reach right from the get go though, and Patrick Kane danced in and scored a simple but stunning goal with about 12 minutes left to go in the first period.
You can almost see Lehtonen over-thinking the shot as Kane comes streaking forward on a blue-line-in breakaway. The closest defender had barely made it to the tops of the circles before the ‘Hawks forward slid the puck to his backhand and buried it in one smooth motion.
It’s tough to detect, but Kane does make a little move in there. He opens up his wrists a touch and the Dallas goalie bites in a big way. This is the kind of night that Lehtonen would have the rest of the way, and he’d eventually get the hook in the second period. Chicago has now won two games in a row after losing three straight and has outscored the competition 12-4 across those two games.
