When we entered Match Day Six of UEFA Champions League group play, things were murky in Group F. Arsenal entered the week in first place with 12 points while Borussia Dortmund and Napoli were tied at nine points. Napoli needed a win either by an unrealistically large margin or a draw or loss from Borussia Dortmund.

The game looked promising for Napoli when Gonzalo Higuain scored and gave Napoli a 1-0 lead. At the time, Borussia Dortmund was locked in with Marseille with one goal apiece.

Unfortunately for Napoli, they didn’t get enough to advance. While they were able to hold on to the lead and win the game, Dortmund scored a late goal to win.

That left all three teams — Arsenal, Napoli, and Borussia Dortmund — with 12 points. Only two could advance and Napoli was the odd man out because of the goal differential.

It was still a valiant effort and it isn’t the worst. While Napoli’s Champions League season is over, they now move to the UEFA Europa League tournament. Napoli still has a shot at a European trophy.
