Texas Tech Red Raiders walk-on quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was named the Big 12’s Offensive Freshman of the Year on Wednesday, has declared that he’ll be transferring to another school.
Mayfield threw for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2013, completing 64.1 percent of his passes.
According to the San Antonio Express-News, Mayfield said he’s transferring due to unspecified “disagreements and miscommunications” with the coaching staff. He added:
I’m disappointed because I love Lubbock. I’m thankful for the opportunity they gave me and everything that Lubbock has done for me, but it’s time for me to move on and start over.
I just didn’t feel comfortable anymore, and I just felt like it was time to move on.
Even though Mayfield was a walk-on this season, he will have to sit out for a year if he ends up transferring to another FBS school. Reports also say that he’s been barred from transferring to another school within Texas Tech’s conference.
The Red Raiders, sans Mayfield, will play the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Holiday Bowl on December 30.
