The Calgary Flames have fired general manager Jay Feaster and Assistant General Manager John Weisbrod. The team made the announcement official via their website. As per the team’s press release:
The Calgary Flames announced today that General Manager Jay Feaster and Assistant General Manager John Weisbrod have been relieved of their duties effective immediately.
The team also announced a press conference for 11 am, and will discuss the firings further. No successor for the role was immediately named, and it’s unclear at this juncture whether or not the team will name one at their press conference. Brian Burke is the first name that comes to mind since Calgary created a president of hockey operations role for the longtime general manager last January, but that’s just speculation at this point.
At the time of his firing the Flames were four games under the .500 mark and were in second-to-last place in the rough and tumble Pacific Division. While the firing isn’t surprising, the timing is somewhat alarming. This move comes without warning, and it’s unknown what finally caused Calgary to clean house.
The duo hasn’t produced a playoff team yet, but has been pretty successful over the last few years at the draft while attempting to rebuild the franchise.
More to come…
