As the 2013 College Football Awards show continued to roll out the honors for the top players in the nation, it was time to name the 2013 Jim Thorpe Award winner, which goes to the best defensive back in the nation.
When the award was handed out, it came as no surprise that Michigan State Spartans cornerback Darqueze Dennard was the man to take home the award.
Dennard beat out Florida State’s LaMarcus Joyner and Oklahoma State’s Justin Gilbert for the award.
The Michigan State star has been fantastic in the defensive backfield on one of the best defenses in the nation and many expect him to be among the top cornerbacks taken in the 2014 NFL Draft. With the hardware added to his trophy case, he certainly has the credentials and talent that you want in a potential shutdown corner.
To show how incredible Dennard has been in coverage this year, opposing quarterbacks went a mere 3-for-31 on throws that were over 15-yards to receivers covered by him. That is what we like to call a shutdown corner, ladies and gentlemen, so hopefully he will be able to take that talent to the next level.
