The in-state rivals come from big time conferences, making this match up a highly anticipated one. The Big Ten (Iowa) and the Big 12 (Iowa State) each have four ranked teams, and will be a major part of the college basketball postseason come March.
Iowa State is undefeated at 7-0, with a notable win against Michigan. The Hawkeyes are 10-1, with the lone loss against No. 10 Villanova in overtime of the finals of the Battle 4 Atlantis Championship. Both programs are putting together fine seasons, but need notable wins before they can guarantee a spot in March Madness.
Iowa is led by senior guard Roy Devyn Marble who is averaging 15.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. Junior forward Aaron White is the second-leading scorer at 12.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. Sophomore Forward Jarrod Uthoff is their leading rebounder at 7.0 rebounds and 10.3 points per contest. Iowa is in the top ten in scoring, rebounding, and assisting, making them a tough team for any opponent.
Iowa State is led by senior forward Melvin Ejim who is averaging 18.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. He is hitting 52.3% of his shots from the field. Senior guard DeAndre Kane is another force averaging 15.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. Kane and Ejim form a dynamic duo as good as any in the country. Junior forward Dustin Hogue establishes an inside presence averaging 12.7 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.
I love in-state rivalries, and the players on both squads will surely make this game fun to watch. Don’t forget to watch on ESPNU at 9:30 pm ET. Also, come back to FanSided.com for a game recap later tonight.
