Beyonce surprised the internet when she secretly released an album on iTunes Thursday night. It was unexpected, unannounced and a surprise for her fans.

Given the regularity with which big albums are leaked on the internet ahead of schedule, it is surprising that she was able to pull this off. In some ways it might become more of a trend for artists trying to prevent leaks.

“I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it. I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans,” Beyonce said in the album’s announcement on Thursday, via the Los Angeles Times.

“I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out,” she added. “I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”

Right now the album is available for download only in the iTunes store for the price of $15.99. There are plans to release the CD/DVD set, and manufacturing of the physical albums begins Thursday and will he available before the holidays according to her label. For now you can download it here.
