Leading up to the big fight between Brandon Rios and Manny Pacquiao on November 23, Rios took four VADA-administered drugs tests. Rios was able to pass every test leading up to his pay-per-view bout, but now we have learned that Rios unfortunately failed his post-fight drug test that was also administered by VADA.
Rios tested positive for the banned substance methylexanamine, which is also known as dimenthylamylamine or DMAA and is commonly used in dietary supplements.
Bob Arum of Top Rank confirmed the news.
“There was a little something in his urine after the fight,’’ Arum said, via The Ring. “It was something they (VADA) reported to the Chinese commission after the fight. He passed all the tests before that. It wasn’t a steroid. It was probably something he took to make weight.’’
Pacquiao passed all five of the tests that were administered by VADA.
There are no reports on whether or not Rios will have to forfeit a percentage of his purse for the failed drug test, but it would not be a surprise if he was fined.
