The UFC held a special media conference call on Friday afternoon with president Dana White and welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. The call was held to address St-Pierre’s future in the sport after he previously said that he would like some time off from the sport, and his announcement confirmed what we had all believed.
St-Pierre announced that he will be vacating the UFC welterweight title out of respect for the other UFC competitors and take an indefinite leave of absence from the sport.
After St-Pierre left the call, Dana White addressed the media to say that on March 15 Johnny Hendrick wil fight Robbie Lawler for the vacant title.
The bout for the vacant title will take place at UFC 171 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
With the addition of Hendricks vs. Lawler to the UFC 171 fight card, here is how it currently looks:
- Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler for vacant UFC welterweight title
- Hector Lombard vs. Jake Shields
- Diego Sanchez vs. Myles Jury
- Ovince St. Preux vs. Thiago Silva
- Robert McDaniel vs. Tor Troeng
