The Kansas Jayhawks defeated the New Mexico Lobos 80-63 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The Jayhawks improved to 7-3, and the Lobos fell to 7-2.
Kansas opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take a nine-point lead with 17:13 to go. New Mexico battled back, and after a Kendall Williams four-point play, the Lobos were down 63-58 at 8:04.
The Jayhawks played shut down defense the final 8:04, and ended the game on a 17-5 run.
Shooting was the name of the game tonight. Kansas shot 51.9% from the field to New Mexico’s 33.3%. Kansas will look to continue shooting well against Georgetown on Dec. 21st. New Mexico will practice shooting the rock to gear up for its instate rival New Mexico State on December 17th.
Kansas top performers: Forward Perry Ellis scored 21 points and collected nine rebounds. Center Joel Embiid netted 18 points along with six rebounds, three steals, and four blocks. Guard Andrew Wiggins scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds, and had two blocks. Guard Wayne Selden Jr. had 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Guard Naadir Tharpe dropped nine dimes along with eight points.
New Mexico top performers: Forward Cameron Bairstow scored 24 points, grabbed six boards, and stole the ball twice. Guard Kendall Williams netted 24 points along with two rebounds and two assists. Center Alex Kirk scored five points and collected five rebounds.
