MLB rumors: Could Yankees rekindle trade talks for Cubs' Darwin Barney?

The New York Yankees likely felt they had a good chance to sign Omar Infante, but the Bronx Bombers lost out to the Kansas City Royals who snagged the veteran infielder/outfielder out of their grasp.

That leaves New York with a bit of a hole on their infield, one that could be filled by the Chicago Cubs’ Darwin Barney who Bruce Levine suspects could become a target for the Yankees:

Yankees interest in Cubs Darwin Barney may pick up . (Royals sign Omar Infante) teams talked earlier.

Levine mentions that both sides have already talked about Barney, so there was obvious interest – either by the Cubs to move Barney or by the Yankees who were interested in acquiring the talented defender.

Unfortunately, despite his impressive defensive skills, Barney is relatively woeful on the offensive side of the ball.

The 28-year-old infielder did have a solid .276 average during the 2011 season, but has dropped off significantly in recent seasons, including a disgusting .208 average this past year.

He would likely fill a platoon/bench role for the Yankees, if such a deal was ever agreed upon.
