Newcastle United and Southampton were playing a big match up this weekend. Both teams were just outside the top 5 in the table and needed a win to move up. At one point during the game there was an interesting exchange that resulted in referee Mike Jones getting hit in the face.
Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga is lying on the ground while Jones, Newcastle Untied’s Moussa Sissoko and a couple of players are talking. Gazzaniga pushes at Sissoko’s thigh.
That led to Sissoko trying to knock his hand away. On the follow through he winds up hitting the referee in the face. The referee then jolts awkwardly before falling to the ground.
It looks like the referee almost flopped. He absorbs the blow even stepping back before deciding to turn and fall. It is rare to see a referee flop, usually they’re trying to control the flopping.
