Texas Longhorns leaving head coaching decision up to Mack Brown
By Josh Hill
Last night when Nick Saban was given a fat extension by Alabama, the news was quickly followed with word that Mack Brown would remain as head coach at Texas. It’s hardly a coincidence that the bits of news not only came out so close together but came out one after the other as Saban had been heavily rumored to be in on the Texas job.
But for now it’s looking like the Longhorns head coaching gig is still Brown’s — if he wants it. Contrary to a report last night that Brown would indeed be staying, another as surfaced which states the decision on whether to stay or go would be entirely up to Brown.
ESPN has been all over the place on this story so it’s hard to gauge just exactly what this report means. ESPN reported earlier this week that last night’s banquet at Texas would basically be a farewell party for Brown. Not long after the banquet ended, it was reported by another outlet that Brown would be staying and now we’re somewhere in-between the two reports.
Either way, it’s clear that if Brown wants to stay, he’s going to stay. It also wouldn’t be surprising if Athletic Director Steve Patterson was leaving the decision up to Brown so that if he does resign, it looks like there was no pressure. This is a confusing situation but one that we will likely hear the end of soon one way or another.
