The Cleveland Indians parted ways with longtime closer Chris Perez this offseason, meaning they’re in need of a fireman.
Who exactly they’re tabbing to be the successor though, remains unknown.
There were rumors suggesting the Indians were involved in heavy talks with former Oakland Athletics closer Grant Balfour, but that deal seemingly fell apart – especially once the Baltimore Orioles involved themselves int he talks, raising Balfour’s asking price.
Two other players rumored to be on the Indians’ wishlist are that of John Axford, a former closer who pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals most recently and Joaquin Benoit who finished the season with the Detroit Tigers.
Both have closing experience, so the names do make some sense considering Indians president Mark Shapiro recently suggested the team will sign a player for the back end of their bullpen ‘with closing experience’ in the next week or so:
Mark Shapiro “we will get a back end bullpen arm with closing experience in next week or 2″
