On Saturday evening, a mystery team emerged in the Gavin Floyd sweepstakes. It was the Atlanta Braves, who not only seemingly swooped in out of no place, but took over as the front runner for Floyd’s services.
Now according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, the two sides could finalize their deal at some point on Monday:
Free-agent pitcher Gavin Floyd is closing in on an agreement with the Atlanta Braves, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com.
A deal for the right-hander could be in place as early as Monday, the source said.
Any deal doesn’t come without risk given Floyd’s injury issues. The veteran arm is coming off an operation to repair his ulnar collateral ligament and a torn flexor tendon, so there are certainly question marks regarding his future performance.
Despite that, the Braves obviously feel comfortable with his recovery and he’s not expected to miss much time – maybe a handful of starts before he’s ready to pitch again, which will likely be around the middle of May.
No terms have been disclosed on the potential deal.
