The St. Louis Cardinals have a tendency to make under the radar moves, often times involving veteran players who quietly emerge as key offseason acquisitions.

Mark Ellis is likely to become the next such move for the Red Birds as it’s being reported the two sides are nearing an agreement on a one-year contract:

Ellis isn’t overly good at anything, but he’s also not overly bad either. About as solid and consistent as they come, Ellis could find himself in a starting role if the young Kolten Wong struggles.

The deal is reportedly complete, pending a physical which will be taken sometime this coming week.

Terms of the deal have yet to be released, though one a one-year deal, there’s not a ton of concern about the financials considering there’s no commitment.

Ellis had a handful of potential suitors, including the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals, but ultimately decided the Cardinals were his best option.
