The biggest news of this past week was Georges St-Pierre announcing that he would be vacating his title, and taking an indefinite leave of absence from MMA. Dana White then dropped the huge news that Robbie Lawler will be taking on Johny Hendricks at UFC 171 for the vacant Welterweight title.
Today on the MMA hour with Ariel Helwani, Johny Hendricks, spoke about his excitement for the upcoming bout. Here is what he had to say:
Dana White called me, and sort of broke the news. I was in Disney World. Like I told him (regarding GSP’s indefinite leave) it doesn’t matter to me, I didn’t care about GSP. Plus, I believe I beat him, and so does the world. I am fighting for the belt, thank you Dana White for giving me another shot at the belt. That is what I was very thankful for.
I am super excited. Who wouldn’t be excited? You find out you are going to fight in Dallas, your own backyard, fighting a very tough opponent in Robbie Lawler. Who wouldn’t be excited for that? I have seen some posts that the fans are very excited for this fight. To be honest with you, I am too. This is going to be a great fight, a fight for the fans. I can’t wait.
Hendricks also went on to say that he was surprised that Carlos Condit was not given the shot, but that was not his decision. He also stated that he was not surprised that GSP left MMA, and does not mind whether or not he ever gets to fight him again. Hendricks continually stated that his purpose in fighting is for the title, not to fight GSP.
