Last week, the Baltimore Orioles refused to budge on Grant Balfour‘s request that they include a third year on his two-year contract offer.
The former Oakland Athletics closer has been adamant that any offer he accept include a third year, but the Orioles simply weren’t willing to make that commitment – until now.
According to Jen Royle, the Orioles have softened on their stance and have given into Balfour’s demands but now the closer wants even more:
Orioles went 2 yrs/$6M per, then 3/$7M (incentives), but Balfour wants 3/$8M w/ vesting option. Source says “they’ll be no vesting option.”
Baltimore has already opted to go above and beyond what they were comfortable with, so it’s hard to imagine them going much further – especially in regards to adding an option year.
Multiple teams have expressed interest in Balfour, so the closer certainly has some room to negotiate but his requests may be too rich for the Orioles, understandably.
