David Backes leaves game early for St. Louis Blues

Bruce Fedyck-USA TODAY Sports

The St. Louis Blues lost to the Ottawa Senators by a 3-2 final last night, and they also lost their captain David Backes toward the end of the second period. Backes collided with Collin Greening while looking down at a loose puck and immediately skated to the bench. It’s unclear why, but the bruising forward seemed to be struggling to keep his legs under him as he worked his way down the tunnel to the locker room.

Here’s a look at the play.

Backes was unable to return following the hit.

The Blues have not released any more information regarding the injury. It’s purely speculation at this juncture, but it appears that Backes was struck in the head by Greening and he was visibly loopy as he made his way into the tunnel, requiring the help of trainers to find his way off of the bench.

St. Louis is right back at it tonight as they take on the San Jose Sharks at the Scottrade Center. We’ll keep you posted on this as more information becomes available. At this point it is unknown whether or not the Blues will be forced to take on San Jose without Backes.
