‘Divergent’ Director Neil Burger Not Returning for Sequels

As we told you earlier, Summit Entertainment has already set release dates for the three films in the Divergent franchise; Divergent which is set to release on March 21, 2014, Insurgent which will debut on March 20, 2015, and Allegiant which is scheduled to release on March 18, 2016. Unfortunately, Summit Entertainment will have to secure a new director for the latter two films, as Variety is reporting that director Neil Burger will not be returning to direct the sequels.

This is something that the studio has encountered before. Lionsgate, Summit’s parent company, encountered this same issue with The Hunger Games franchise when Hunger Games director Gary Ross announced that he would not be returning to the franchise citing a compressed production schedule as the reason for his departure.

This leaves Summit looking for a new director for the Divergent franchise. According to the report, with a release date of March 2015, they will need to start filming no later than spring 2014.

In Divergent, we find Beatrice “Tris” Prior, played by The Secret Life of an American Teenager’s Shailene Woodley. She lives in a dystopian society where everyone is divided into five separate factions based on a different virtue.

When they reach a certain age, teenagers have to decide whether or not they want to remain in their current faction, or change to another one permanently. After making a choice that surprises everyone, her and her fellow faction-members begin their physically and mentally exhausting initiation process that will transform them all. However, Tris holds a secret.

You see, Tris is a divergent, which means that she does not fit into just one category. If her secret were to be revealed, it would certainly mean the end for her. When a growing conflict threatens to destroy everything that they know, her secret may just be the key to protecting everyone she loves; however, it may end up destroying her in the process.

At this point and time, there is no word on who the studio may be eyeing to take over the project.

Divergent is scheduled to be released on March 21, 2014.
