It is always a good thing when a studio has such confidence in a franchise that they schedule two sequels for a film before the original has been released in theaters. We have seen this happen before with the Harry Potter, Avatar, and most recently, The Amazing Spider-Man franchises. Now, this is also the case for the series Divergent.

The first film in the series, Divergent, is based off of a novel by the same name from bestselling author Veronica Roth.

Divergent is not scheduled to hit theaters until March 21, 2014; however, it would seem that Summit Entertainment has such high hopes for the series that they have scheduled release dates for next two films in the series, Insurgent and Allegiant.

Insurgent has been slated for release on March 20, 2015 and Allegiant is scheduled for March 18, 2016.

It would seem that the studio is trying to keep things consistent, and releasing the films on approximately the same date just one year apart from each other.

In Divergent, we find Beatrice “Tris” Prior, played by The Secret Life of an American Teenager’s Shailene Woodley. She lives in a dystopian society where everyone is divided into five separate factions based on a different virtue.

When they reach a certain age, teenagers have to decide whether or not they want to remain in their current faction, or change to another one permanently. After making a choice that surprises everyone, her and her fellow faction-members begin their physically and mentally exhausting initiation process that will transform them all. However, Tris holds a secret.

You see, Tris is a divergent, which means that she does not fit into just one category. If her secret were to be revealed, it would certainly mean the end for her. When a growing conflict threatens to destroy everything that they know, her secret may just be the key to protecting everyone she loves; however, it may end up destroying her in the process.

The film is being directed by Limitless director Neil Burger. The screenplay is being adapted by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor.

In addition to Woodley, the film stars Kate Winslet, Tony Goldwyn, Ashley Judd, Zoe Kravitz, Theo James, Miles Teller, and more.

Divergent is scheduled to be released on March 21, 2014.
