The five competitors who will represent Great Britain in short track speed skating at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were announced on Monday. The group is already being called one of the strongest teams the country has ever fielded.

The members:

  • Jon Eley
  • Elise Christie
  • Charlotte Gilmartin
  • Richard Shoebridge
  • Jack Whelbourne

Team leader Stuart Horsepool discussed the talented group:

I’m very pleased with the athletes that have been selected for Sochi. They have all worked incredibly hard to earn the right to be part of Team GB, not just this season but over the course of the last four years. This is without doubt the strongest British team we have ever put together, and a number of the selected athletes have opportunities of bringing home medals from Sochi (Inside the Games).

The group is a veteran one; only Gilmartin and Shoebridge lack previous Olympic experience. Eley has had the most success at past Olympics, placing fifth at the 2006 Turin Games and sixth at the 2010 Vancouver Games in the 500m.
