Fight Hunger Bowl will be first bowl game with female officials

The 2013 Fight Hunger Bowl will make some history this December by being the first FBS bowl game to feature female officials.

To top it off, with Sarah Thomas and Maia Chaka being named as two members of the Conference USA officiating team slated to work the game, the Fight Hunger bowl will also be the first FBS game, bowl or not, to feature a pair of female officials. (A majority-female officiating crew worked a Division II game earlier this year.)

Football fans may already familiar with Thomas, who became the first female official to work a major college game back in 2007. She also officiated the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl between Marshall and Ohio back in 2009, becoming the first female referee to be on a crew for a bowl game. She has her sights set on moving beyond the college game, though, and is currently trying to become the first permanent female official in the NFL.

While Chaka isn’t quite as famous as Thomas (yet), she has been working her way up the officiating ranks for years. (Here’s a profile piece from 2009 about her quest.)

The Fight Hunger Bowl will take place on December 27. Coverage is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm PT on ESPN.
