It would seem like Joaquin Phoenix’s star is on the rise once again. According to Variety, after the acclaim that he is receiving from his performance in the Spike Jonze film Her, he is now being eyed by Warner Bros. for a role in one of their hottest properties.
According to Variety’s sources, the studio is looking at Joaquin Phoenix for the role of a villain, who many presume to be Lex Luthor, in director Zack Snyder’s currently untitled Batman vs. Superman movie.
The film is still in pre-production, so it is still really early to determine how true this is. However, they have been rounding out the cast as of late. A good number of people from the previous Man of Steel film will be returning to their roles. They have also cast Fast & Furious actress Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, also known as Wonder Woman.
There have also been rumors circulating around the internet that the studio was interested in bringing on Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa for a role in the film; however, that has yet to become official.
In the past, Phoenix has been known to shy away from big-budget blockbusters and stick to the more artistic and independent films. So, even if the studio were to make him an offer, there is still a chance that he would not accept the role.
As I said before, there are quite a few actors who are already attached to the film. Henry Cavill will be putting back on the cape as the role of Clark Kent/Superman. Joining him will be Amy Adams, who is returning as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Clark’s mother Martha Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, the Editor of the Daily Planet, and Ben Affleck as the Caped Crusader, Batman.
Batman vs. Superman is scheduled to be released on July 17, 2015.
