San Diego Padres sign Joaquin Benoit

The San Diego Padres have signed free agent pitcher Joaquin Benoit. The deal is still pending a physical, but there is an agreement in place for a two-year deal. The dollar amount is still unknown but under $10 million would be a safe bet, somewhere int he $7-9 million range.

Benoit will turn 37-years-old in the middle of next season. Last year he pitched in 66 games (67 innings) and had a 4-1 win-loss record. He had a solid 2.01 ERA, the best mark of any season he has pitched.

Benoit also had 24 saves on the season. He only allowed 15 earned runs, five home runs while walking 22 batters. He struck out an impressive 73 batters.

The Padres have Huston Street as a closer, Benoit would likely be a set-up guy.
