Today, it was announced that Indiana University’s Assembly Hall where the Hoosiers men’s and women’s basketball team play at will get a new name for beginning the 2016 season.
Assembly Hall which opened back in 1971 is finally getting renovated and that is when the renaming will happen. Assembly Hall in the beginning of 2016 season will be called Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
It is going to be named after philanthropist Cindy Simon Skjodt who has been a very generous donor over the years including her $40 million gift to the school.
In a quote Cindy Simon Skjodt said:
“It brings me great pride to offer this gift to IU, for the next generation, not just to my children, but to other children too.”
Her father was the late Mel Simon, who co-owned the nation’s largest mall company and the Indiana Pacers.
Indiana men’s basketball head coach Tom Crean said about the renovations to Assembly Hall:
“Will preserve the legacy of a national treasure.”
This is a great idea by Indiana University and it is a good day in the state.
