On Thursday morning, we found out that any possible reunion between the Kansas City Royals and free agent pitcher Ervin Santana was unlikely due to the Royals already hitting their salary peak.
Now we’ve learned some of the teams interested in Santana won’t part with a draft pick to sign the veteran arm, reducing his options even more.
Teams like the Arizona Diamondbacks (among others) have shown interest in Santana but signing him would force the team to forfeit a draft pick, something they’re not content doing after their recent roster moves. The same holds true for fellow starter Ubaldo Jimenez:
The Diamondbacks are among many teams that will not consider giving up a draft pick to sign either Ervin Santana or Ubaldo Jimenez.
There are still quality pitchers on the market who won’t force the signing team to give up a draft pick, like Matt Garza, so it makes logical sense for Arizona to move away from players requiring draft pick compensation – especially after trading away some youth during the Winter Meetings.
