The Baltimore Orioles and closer Grant Balfour went back and forth for over a week in regards to a contract – a contract that looked unlikely given the demands of the former Oakland Athletics closer. However, a last minute agreement was struck and Balfour was set to join the Orioles after agreeing upon a two-year, $15 million dollar deal.
Unfortunately, the Orioles found results in Balfour’s physical that they weren’t comfortable with and now the would be deal is ‘in limbo’ as the team has reportedly turned their attention to Fernando Rodney:
Acdg to industry source,
#Orioles seem to b turning their attention to Fernando Rodney w the Balfour decision in limbo and likely collapsing
The ‘problem’ the Orioles found in Balfour’s physical is in his right shoulder, a shoulder that was surgically repaired in 2005. However, the closer hasn’t had any issues (at least publicly) with the shoulder since so the concern seemed a little strange.
Meanwhile, it appears if the deal does indeed fall apart (which seems to be the case) Baltimore will do what they can to bring in Rodney as the closer market quickly dries up.
