Europe mounts huge comeback to win Royal Trophy

Jose Maria Olazabal is no stranger to epic comebacks on the links, and the captain for the European team oversaw another remarkable come-from-behind win on Sunday. Olazabal’s squad won five of the final six matches of the afternoon to win the Royal Trophy over an Asian team that had built what seemed to be an insurmountable lead earlier in the day.

Olazabel praised his team afterward, thanking them for their resilience:

I want to thank these fantastic eight guys who did something extraordinary today. It is something, to be honest, I had a few doubts (about), especially through the round. Thank-you very much for your contribution (Reuters).

The comeback mirrors the win Olazabel helped orchestrate int he Ryder Cup last year. In case you forgot, the European squad went into the final day needing 8.5 points to win the event. The United States needed a mere 4.5 points for the win, but a collective Sunday collapse in the singles matches allowed the Europeans to claim the trophy.
