Rogue Will Not Be In 'X-Men: Days of Future Past'

It looks as if Days of Future Past will be short one mutant when it hits theaters.

The film, which combines the cast of the original X-Men characters like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Halle Berry’s Storm with the younger cast of characters from X-Men: First Class like Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique and James McAvoy’s younger Professor X has undergone a change that will change the course of the film altogether for one of the cast.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a rescue scene that was shot very early in the film’s production, featuring Magneto, played by Ian McKellen, Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart, Rogue, as played by True Blood’s Anna Paquin, and Iceman, played by Shawn Ashmore, had to be cut from the film.

The bad news is, this was the only scene that Rogue had in the film.

In the EW article, director Bryan Singer explained that the cut had to be made, not because it wasn’t a good scene, but that it was unfortunately one of the scenes that just ‘had to go’.

“Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous,” explains Singer. “It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”

According to the report, Paquin has already been informed of the cut, and that she completely understood.

As sad as this situation is, this is unfortunately something that happens more than people would like in the film industry. Sometimes, no matter how great a segment may look, it just doesn’t fit into the dynamic of the film. If you go against your better judgment and leave said segment in the film, you risk throwing off the entire flow of the script and the dynamic of the movie, which can ultimately distract from the entire point that you are trying to make.

Singer said that the cut had absolutely nothing to do with Paquin’s performance, and says that she is a ‘brilliant actress’ and that he would ‘work with her in a heartbeat’.
